Re: Good Governance Vs Capitalism as the engine of Growth and Sustainable Development
The Universal Kingdom is based on Good Governance and not series of "isms "
I read with interest the eloquent defense of Capitalism by our enlightened prophet below.
Good governance that is based on transparency, accountability and responsiveness to the interests of all stakeholders is key to our human and divine connection and sustainable survival as the human race and the unique planet.
What is perceived as strength by one landmark and one community can be perceived as weakness by others. Survival of the fittest is a human perception and may not show reality as it unfolds. I was watching a special BBC SCIENCE series called "Frozen Planet" and the American Science series of the Hubble discoveries and some unknown facts presented as Un identified Foreign Objects, etc and concur that our knowledge and understanding of the universe is not complete.
Faith answers or understands the Why question whereas science is good at explaining why questions. The real issue is what, who, when and where are not answered by the series of "isms" be it Capitalism, Socialism and Communism, etc.
The experience of unregulated capitalism is wiping out all the assets of the past 500 western civilization and we are back to Africa being the only Growth Continent. The chinese are already investing their western earned resources into Africa where the Green Natural Resources are in abundance. The recent series of IMF & World Bank meetings and reports show capitalism as practiced over the past 30 years with deregulations, speculations away from manufacturing and infrastructure development is seen to be leading us to bursting of the series of technology and real estate bubbles. The war on terror bubble is also going to bust future savings!
I will say let us learn from our experiences. Our Ethiopian/African Sages say, Wise people learn from others mistakes, clever ones from their own, and fools continue to live in ignorance and abject poverty!
The issue is not this or that man made "isms" but Good Governance that is based on 3As, 3Es and Freedom of Choice. For those un initiated the As stand for Accessibility, Affordability, Accountability and the 3Es, Efficiency, Effectiveness and Equity, ....
Please remember Freedom of Choice that can only happen where there is transparency, accounta bility and responsiveness or participation by concerned stake holders.
Yes Capitalism is great if corporate welfare is matched by Capital welfare. In the end the rule of law should force us to develop our own internal tools of self regulation and professional standards that is accountable to the private and public sector. We need to learn from Ponzi Schemes and Speculation Schemes of the last two centuries.
Remember: When ever enlightened geniuses of capitalism/Socialism/Communism emerge, we should us the Wisdom of Reagan, Trust but verify! I will add if in doubt trust your Continuous Quality Improvement Tools of CORT Analysis and Option Appraisals of Decision Science.

Government and Capitalism
Are we not judged by God relative to our kindness to the downtrodden and the disadvantaged ? Maybe. But since God created this planet and everything on it, including the laws of nature which dictate that the strong survive and the weak perish, why are models based on those laws so frequently disregarded? Can anything survive for long if it continues to lower its standards to the weakest 15% of itself ? All living things, from animals to humans, by following such an approach would become extinct in time. All companies and governments will eventually bankrupt themselves by governing their assets in this manner. Communism lived and died quickly because it strangled itself with an idealistic theory that sounded generous, but was seriously flawed. Socialism is like a deadly lung disease, wherein you eventually die by slow suffocation. Capitalism, alone, takes into account the true nature of our species and will always survive through self adjustment.
When the government underwrites whole markets, capitalism cannot work, and begin to lose track of the "real" values of the products within that market. In a capitalistic system, "stimulation" of the markets is the same as recreational drugs to a human being----it creates an unrealistic euphoria, which is short-lived and painful when the effects fade. False stimulation masks reality, rather than encouraging us to deal with it. But the pain of the way things really are eventually returns---no matter if the stimulant is repeated, because in the end, the government will collapse under the burden of propping up every failed or failing business. We continue to see this in our continued economic crisis.

Vatican Reprimands a Group of U.S. Nuns and Plans Changes

The Vatican has appointed an American bishop to rein in the largest and most influential group of Catholic nuns in the United States, saying that an investigation found that the group had “serious doctrinal problems.”
The Vatican’s assessment, issued on Wednesday, said that members of the group, the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, had challenged church teaching on homosexuality and the male-only priesthood, and promoted “radical feminist themes incompatible with the Catholic faith.”
The sisters were also reprimanded for making public statements that “disagree with or challenge the bishops, who are the church’s authentic teachers of faith and morals.” During the debate over the health care overhaul in 2010, American bishops came out in opposition to the health plan, but dozens of sisters, many of whom belong to the Leadership Conference, signed a statement supporting it — support that provided crucial cover for the Obama administration in the battle over health care.
The conference is an umbrella organization of women’s religious communities, and claims 1,500 members who represent 80 percent of the Catholic sisters in the United States. It was formed in 1956 at the Vatican’s request, and answers to the Vatican, said Sister Annmarie Sanders, the group’s communications director.
Word of the Vatican’s action took the group completely by surprise, Sister Sanders said. She said that the group’s leaders were in Rome on Wednesday for what they thought was a routine annual visit to the Vatican when they were informed of the outcome of the investigation, which began in 2008.
“I’m stunned,” said Sister Simone Campbell, executive director of Network, a Catholic social justice lobby founded by sisters. Her group was also cited in the Vatican document, along with the Leadership Conference, for focusing its work too much on poverty and economic injustice, while keeping “silent” on abortion and same-sex marriage.
“I would imagine that it was our health care letter that made them mad,” Sister Campbell said. “We haven’t violated any teaching, we have just been raising questions and interpreting politics.”
The verdict on the nuns group was issued by the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, which is now led by an American, Cardinal William Levada, formerly the archbishop of San Francisco. He appointed Archbishop J. Peter Sartain of Seattle to lead the process of reforming the sisters’ conference, with assistance from Bishop Thomas J. Paprocki and Bishop Leonard Blair, who was in charge of the investigation of the group.
They have been given up to five years to revise the group’s statutes, approve of every speaker at the group’s public programs and replace a handbook the group used to facilitate dialogue on matters that the Vatican said should be settled doctrine. They are also supposed to review the Leadership Conference’s links with Network and another organization, the Resource Center for Religious Life.
Doctrinal issues have been in the forefront during the papacy of Benedict XVI, who was in charge of the Vatican’s doctrinal office before he became pope. American nuns have come under particular scrutiny. Last year, American bishops announced that a book by a popular theologian at Fordham University, Sister Elizabeth A. Johnson, should be removed from all Catholic schools and universities.
And while the Vatican was investigating the Leadership Conference, the Vatican was also conducting a separate, widespread investigation of all women’s religious orders and communities in the United States. That inquiry, known as a “visitation,” was concluded last December, but the results of that process have not been made public.

US nominee Jim Yong Kim has been chosen as the new president of the World Bank.
The Korean-American health expert is currently the president of Dartmouth University.
He faced a strong challenge for the post, which has traditionally gone to an American, from Nigerian Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.
Dr Kim will succeed Robert Zoellick, serving a five-year term beginning on 1 July, the World Bank said in a statement.

US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said the new president's background would be valuable in the role.

Meanwhile, the bank hailed the selection process as competitive, saying that the challenge posed by Mrs Okonjo-Iweala, as well as by Colombian candidate Jose Antonio Ocampo, would benefit the institution in the long run.
The three candidacies had "enriched the discussion of the role of the president and of the World Bank Group's future direction", the World Bank said.
'New kind of leader'
By convention, the US has always held the top job at the World Bank since it was founded in 1944.

Once again the American candidate has got the job.
But he is not in the traditional pattern; neither a politician nor a financier.
He is, as President Obama emphasised when he announced the nomination, a development professional.
He is an expert on health issues in the developing world, especially HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis.
Those issues are important at the Bank, but it does have a wider, economic development brief.
Dr Kim does not have much of a track record in that area. Still, his admirers say he brings a real commitment to alleviating poverty and he is a great listener.
In fact, he was busy listening when his appointment was announced. He is in Peru hearing what one of the Bank's member countries wants from the agency he is about to lead.
The top job of its sister organisation, the International Monetary Fund, has also always gone to a European but there has been much pressure from emerging economies to open the processes of both organisations to competition.
This year's vote was the first time the World Bank had to choose between candidates since its creation more than 60 years ago.
Mr Ocampo announced on Friday that he was withdrawing from the race and supporting Ms Okonjo-Iweala.
The World Bank did not provide details of the final vote or which country had backed which candidate.
Dr Kim will oversee a staff of 9,000 economists and development experts, and a loan portfolio that hit $258bn (£163bn) last year.
Mark Weisbrot of the Center for Economic and Policy Research in Washington suggested Dr Kim would make a very different kind of leader.
"There's just no comparison between him and any of the prior World Bank presidents," he said.
"The others were political insiders. They spent most of their lives getting rich or becoming politically powerful, or worse. Kim, by contrast, has spent most of his life trying to improve the lives of poor people."

A fine choice by any measure.
Despite its name, the World Bank's main focus is the reduction of poverty and disease in the poorest of countries through the funding of a variety of projects. Something this gentleman has worked on and excelled at for decades.
To try to deny him the post just because he's American says more about his detractors than him.

psychologists, nurses, social workers, case managers, and qualified mental
health professionals, residential counselors to provide an individualized care
plan that includes habilitation and behavior support plan (ISP, BSP) for over
30 consumers of wide range of age groups and behavioral challenges with a mix
of disabilities from mild to profound residing in 6 homes in Washington DC. 3.2. Accomplishments. Undertook a comprehensive needs assessment and SWOT
analysis that looks at the strength, weakness, and opportunities and threats
both at internal and external environments. Developed an extensive five
years Human Care Agreement for Residential and Respite Services with
appropriate budget and negotiated with the Government of the District of Columbia,
DHS/Mental Retardation/Developmental Disabilities Administration.
Directed a team of professionals to ensure a highly organized services that
allowed the re-certification of six group homes with appropriate compliment of
health and human services for ICFMR facilities. Prepared regular monthly
training with an up-to-date training manual to professionals on a holistic
approach in improving the safety and well being of consumers with mental health
and mental retardation challenges.
